Allergy Testing & Management
Understanding and Managing Allergies at StoneBriar Pediatrics
Allergies can significantly impact a child’s quality of life. At StoneBriar Pediatrics, we’re committed to helping you understand and manage your child’s allergies.
What are Allergies?
Allergies occur when your child’s immune system overreacts to a substance, called an allergen. Common allergens include:
- Foods: Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish
- Inhalants: Pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander
- Environmental irritants: Latex and certain medications
Types of Allergy Tests
To accurately diagnose allergies, we offer two primary testing methods:
- 1. Skin Allergy Testing
- How it works: A small amount of allergen is pricked onto your child's skin. We then observe for any reactions, such as redness or swelling.
- Benefits: Quick results, often within 15-20 minutes.
- Considerations: Mild discomfort during the test and potential for a delayed reaction.
- 2. Blood Allergy Testing
- How it works: A blood sample is drawn and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
- Benefits: More accurate for certain types of allergies, especially food allergies.
- Considerations: Longer wait time for results compared to skin testing.

What to Expect During an Allergy Test
- Consultation: We'll discuss your child's symptoms, medical history, and potential allergens.
- Test Administration: The chosen test (skin or blood) will be administered.
- Result Interpretation: We'll review the results with you and discuss treatment options.
Treating Allergies
If your child is diagnosed with allergies, we’ll work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. Treatment options may include:
- Allergen Avoidance: Identifying and avoiding triggers.
- Medication: Antihistamines, decongestants, and corticosteroids.
- Immunotherapy: Allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy to gradually desensitize your child to allergens.
Preventing Allergies
While we can’t always prevent allergies, there are steps you can take to reduce your child’s risk:
- Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding for at least six months can help protect your baby's immune system.
- Delayed Introduction of Allergenic Foods: Consult with your pediatrician about the appropriate timing for introducing potential allergens.
- Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing and cleaning can help reduce exposure to allergens.
Remember, if you have any concerns about your child’s allergies, please consult with a pediatrician.
